LEARNING TO BUILD FROM SCRATCH

LEARNING TO BUILD FROM SCRATCH

Made with Figma and Squarespace, La Courtepointe was my breakthrough client. I learned to capture an atmosphere before shaping a layout, translating a local story into a welcoming digital presence. The goal: to help a new Villeray restaurant stand out as a cultural hub in its neighborhood.

UX/UI DESIGNER

La Courtepointe is a neighborhood bar and microbrewery located in Villeray, Montréal.

Known for its community-driven spirit, La Courtepointe wanted a website that reflects its welcoming atmosphere while promoting local events, collaborations, and seasonal menus.

The project aimed to create a bilingual online presence that communicates the bar’s story, values, and unique identity as a cultural gathering space.

Challenge

La Courtepointe aimed to establish a strong digital presence that served as a jumping board for their events, their menu, and their merch.

Strong Branding and simplicity was the name of the game here, easy to find information. and easy to update for the future.

The Challenge:

  • Clearly communicates La Courtepointe values and offerings

  • Strong local SEO for their events and local hub initiative

  • Simple to update

Approach

Due to the intention of staying simple and clear, the website followed conventional structure:

  • Hero section with strong branding answering the who, what and where

  • Gallery of their menu

  • Reservation section

  • Menu

  • Contact & Location

The visual system was inspired by the name La Courtepointe ("quilt" in French). I designed a series of branded backdrops using the restaurant's colour palette, drawing from the stitched patterns of a quilt to create a distinctive and memorable visual identity.

Results

In its first year online, La Courtepointe’s website received over 24,000 visits and 19,000 unique visitors, generating more than 34,000 pageviews.

Most users discovered the bar through Google search and direct traffic, showing strong visibility within the local community. The bounce rate averaged 78.8 %, consistent with quick-reference browsing behavior typical of hospitality sites, where visitors primarily check menu, hours, and event details. Overall, the site has become a key touchpoint for locals looking to explore the bar’s atmosphere and upcoming events.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Established La Courtepointe's first digital home, creating a central place for customers to discover the restaurant, its events, and its story.

  • Improved local visibility through SEO best practices and Google indexing.

  • Built a flexible content structure that makes future updates simple and scalable.

  • Extended the restaurant's warm, handcrafted brand identity into a cohesive digital experience.

REFLECTION

This was my first freelance project and the one that sparked my passion for helping small businesses build a stronger digital presence. Working closely with the owners showed me how thoughtful design can do more than create a beautiful website, it can help a local business earn trust, tell its story, and connect with more people in its community.
